I can imagine that this button originated on a wool coat, like sailors used to wear, that once past it's prime was stripped up for mat rags. She used a lot of blues in her hooked mats, and every one was a design she created herself, nothing went to waste on the farm.
The original button is most definitely vintage, if not downright antique, since it was pulled from Grandma's button box and she collected buttons, yes, in a Danish cookie tin along with a chocolate tin or 3, for decades until her passing in the late 90's.
